Amazing powers of prediction.....

I have this amazing prediction that the illustrious Mr Thompson will soon be blaming the recent incident in Canada on the fact that GTA encouraged these youths to smoke drugs, and that is what led to the incident.

This assumption will, as always, be made without any knowledge of (a) how long the children have been smoking cannabis for and (b) where they managed to get hold of cannabis in the first place.

We will also get the usual Speil about how multiple organisations have found a causal link between computer games and violence (this keeps being rolled out despite the fact it has been proved to be false on numerous occasions) and then he'll run out of ideas, claim he's in contact with the lawyer, the police, the authorities and Papa Smurf (with press release CC'd to all of them)

Jack will, of course, amazingly have an attack of Amnesia when asked why a loaded gun was kept in an insecure location in a house with children in, and an attack of blindness to the numerous accidental shooting incidents which take place every year without any help from Video Games whatsoever. There is even an incident in Russia where a child shot his mother whilst pretending to be a Policeman. What would Jack suggest to deal with that one I wonder?

The more Jack Thompson provides children and parents with a scapegoat for dangerous or irresponsible behaviour, the more he is encouraging it to happen. He is not the solution to the problem, however, he is, more and more, becoming the cause. After all, how do you think the kid got the idea to blame it on Video Games in the first place? Yup, you guessed it, the rantings of paranoid Anti-game crusaders on the Internet.

Blind leading the blind....

You know, it strikes me that 'United we Stand, United we Fall' is becoming more and more a catchphrase for today's society. Rather than learn from mistakes, or stand back and try to see both sides of the story, it seems far more preferable to plunge headlong into assumption and fear.
The war between sensationalism and reason wages on. But whilst the money lays in sensationalism, which is, at the end of the day, an adverse form of pornography, then reason faces an uphill struggle.
